CLIL UNIT: THE ATMOSPHERE

Subject: Natural Science

Level : 1º ESO

This unit is focused on the different aspects related to the atmosphere. If we know better the components and the dynamic of the atmosphere we can be able to understand usual processes that occurs around us.

Learning outcomes:
  • To learn the composition of air in the Earth’s atmosphere.
  • To develop an understanding in the air and main characteristics of its gases
  • To know the main atmospheric phenomena
  • To understand weather conditions related to temperature
  • To build an awareness of air pollution
Session 1: In this session we will introduce the unit and we will study the atmosphere's layers.

We are starting the unit with an interactive activity called "The Earth Atmosphere". This activity explain a little about the topic and ask some questions to make sure the students understanding.

Task 1 : The students have to answer the questions the interactive activity propose.

Task 2: The students will read an adaptation of a text explaining the atmosphere's layers and after that they will have to fill the gaps in an activity related to that text.

Session 2: The second sessiion will be focused on the weather and how to read weather maps.

Task 3: The students will watch an explicative video about reading and understanding synoptic charts to forecast the weather.

After that they will work on a sheet called "Weather Watch" where they will use different symbols related to weather maps and they will make a little weather forecast using comparative adjectives and vocabulary related to weather conditions.

Session 3: Finally we will work on atmosphere pollution.

Task 4: The students will have to find several pollutants that we can find regularly in the air.

Task 5: The last task is the WebQuest "Help the atmosphere".
